For an organisation, be it a small one or a larger one, it has to work keeping in mind the benefit of the public. In most cases, the public benefit is seen in the prevention of any pollution release and in the clearance of the environment. Although the functioning of the companies is their own lookout, some external organisations take care to guard these functions and check on the performance on a continuous basis.
For industrial sectors, the environmental impact due to the organisation is controlled by the ISO 14001 which is an environmental management system or EMS. By this, the impact on environment is controlled by streamlining the activities and services. Continuous and sustained effect on the environmental performance is kept track through such a certification. With the help of such certification, efforts are undertaken to achieve the environmental objectives and ensure that the company is taking necessary steps for the compliance.
There are two parts of this particular certification, one being the report on the requirements to create the right management system while the other is about the normal EMS rules and regulations. Depending on the industry type, these regulations differ. Such a certification is necessary for the industries of any type, as it shows people that the particular industry in question adopts the directed environmental safety and upliftment.
Other specific environmental characteristics are also needed to be watched for which may include, performance evaluation, labelling, life cycle analysis, auditing and communication. Those organisations which meet up with the standards of the EMS will reflect that their objective is environment friendly which helps in gaining the trust of the consumers. The intention of the ISO 14001 is to help the company strategize so that the environmental plan and set up are being done in the right way.
Different companies have a different set up for their manufacturing or action. This means that individualising every organisation is not very feasible due to which this particular ISO certification allows for the meeting of the same generic standard by different industries. The requirements of the environmental criteria are equal for everyone. Such commonality also helps in communication between organisations, regulators and the common man who is the customer.
As an individual company, everyone has the right to make their own process and as social obligation, the environmental clearance has to be properly maintained and sustained as dictated by the EMS. A deep seated effect is created in the minds of the owners of the company that they are working in an ethically right direction and the employees are in the assurance that the companies, in which they are working, have the right set up for a healthy work environment.
