Exterior Front Door Options & Features

When it comes to the front entrance of your house, the number of options are virtually endless. As you begin looking through the various exterior front door varieties and features, you will want to consider two main aspects: style and security.

There are many different types and styles of exterior front doors available. Doors come with many different types of finishes including varnish, stain, paint, primer, and even no finishing at all. You can buy doors with certain finishing or finish the door yourself.

When replacing the front door to your house, you will also want to think about the decorative surroundings you may want to include. You can go with a plain front door with nothing around it, or you can involve simple or decorative glass insets to go around the door. If you have old sidelights, you can replace them with glass that is more decorative in various shapes. Many people also find transoms attractive. These are decorative glass panes that go over the doorway.

There are three main materials that are generally available in exterior front doors: Wood, fiberglass, and steel.  Wood is heavier and more traditional in style.  Wood doors have an inviting presence and they are available in many different colors and styles. Wood doors can have glass, but the overall weight of the door adds a security to the home overall. Fiberglass doors are durable and quite easy to maintain. They resist rot, rust, cracks, and dents. These doors are energy efficient and they also come in a variety of finishes and styles. Steel doors are even more popular than wood and they also have great strength. Steel is the most cost effective material for a front door and they are the best choice when it comes to security.

Exterior front doors are also key to the security of your home. All doors should have a deadbolt style lock in order to ensure security. To be the most efficient, deadbolt locks should go at least one inch beyond the side of the door. Locks can actually be quite attractive. The doorknobs and locks come in a large variety of styles and choices. They can be quite simple or even luxurious. You can find knobs and handles to go along with any door finish you choose. There are brass, bronze and nickel options in many different styles. If you want your door to have a cohesive style, make sure the hinges, knob or handle matches each other. You could even match the mailbox and the numbers on your home to these accessories.

Doors can also have added accessories like knockers, house numbers, doorbells and other such options. If you want a stylish look that has unity, make sure any accessory you add fits into the original style and look of the door.
