Perhaps one of the most crucial aspects of a store set up is its window design. The reason for this being, that there are only two ways for a store to let people know that your store exists. The first is a simple (or complex for that matter) store sign. The second; is your window display.
Obviously there are other means to let people know that your store exists, internet advertising, mass mailings, even phone calls about special deals and offers. But contrary to popular belief, this is very expensive, provided you want to do it efficiently. There are so many stores and businesses trying to have a voice in todays market that simply jumping in to the fray without a serious financial commitment and long term strategy will ultimately result in a loss of money.
The lists and lists of friends and client that I know who have blown a lot of money on advertising that went nowhere are astonishing! This is not to say that advertising is a waste of time, I'm simply suggesting that you really need to go all the way if you're trying to create your client base through advertising.
The logical point to begin with is relying on word of mouth. This is usually followed by the question of "how can I be assured that word of mouth will be enough to make it?" well first off there is never an grantees, however, if you have good product with, and perhaps more importantly, good customer service then you are doing the utmost to make your store work.
But I digress, the topic I want to talk about today is something more simple and basic, it is a classic and age old response to one of the most common questions of all business people. They want to know how to get people to come into their stores. The answer is simple, have a distinctive looking sign and more importantly, have a truly unique window display.
So as to belabor the point ill conclude with a simple example. About two blocks from my office there is a store for camping supplies. I must have been open for years but I never really noticed it. On day one the way back from lunch the store struck me with tremendous force! It was completely different! There were some things about its window display that mite seam typical, mannequins and spot lights and that sort of thing but the ingenious message that the ordinary decorative pieces conveyed made me want to take week of work and go camping. There was a bunch of mannequins all sitting around a camp fire dressed from head to foot in the finest quality camping clothing and supplies. There was one tending the fire, another hammering a peg securing a ten which was occupied by additional mannequins.
The conclusion is; if you can have a distinct look for your store then "word of mouth will follow" and people who not necessarily are looking for what you have to offer will find themselves considering what you have to offer.
