Stopping Criminals From Striking Again

People who commit online fraud repeatedly need to be stopped. Imagine if the same person kept coming into a bank and stealing all of the money. Eventually, the people at the bank would call the police when they saw the person come in, whether they had committed a crime that day or not. They would recognize the criminal and take the right steps to stop him or her. One of the problems with online fraud is that this has not been done until recently. People have been busy chasing down those who have committed fraud in the past, not stopping to think that they might strike again. Fortunately, the device reputation that a computer has can now work to stop these repeat offenders.

The reason that this works is because people who commit fraud often use the same computers, tablets, or other devices for everything that they do. They do not buy new ones for every scheme that they have in the same way that most people do not buy a new computer every month for their job. They will have the same device for three to five years, on average. This means that the device itself can be tracked, even if the person cannot. When they try to use it again, they will be recognized as a person who committed a crime in the past.

If a computer has a bad device reputation, it can be blocked from certain sites automatically. The person does not even have to do anything wrong to be thrown off of the site. If they stole money from a bank, for instance, they would be stopped from going on the bank's website again. If they committed credit card fraud and ran up a lot of charges on someone's card, they could be blocked from that site. This is an aggressive way to keep the people who own these cards and these bank accounts safe at all times.

As a result of this, criminals are working to find ways to change their device identification numbers. If they can do this, they could clear the bad reputation that the device has obtained. This is difficult to do, but it is something that is now happening often. If people work too hard to change the ID numbers on their computer, though, they will be noticed. Then they can be brought to justice.

There is some hope that a bad device reputation will be enough to help police track these criminals down. If the computer is blocked from a banking site, a report can be sent to the police. They can then work quickly to see if they can backtrack the computer through the internet to find its owner.
