About to Become a Grandma or Grandpa? Arrange a Short Term Suite Near Your New Grandchild

If you're about to become a grandparent, your first thought might be to move in with your son or daughter for a little while, especially if you don't currently reside in the same city. Sometimes, it makes sense. Sometimes it doesn't.  If it doesn't make sense to stay with the new parents but you want to be close by, you might consider looking into the renting of extended stay suites, which can be ideal for a month or two visit.

Why it might not make sense to move in with the new parents (or parents to be):

  • It might not make sense if your son or daughter (or son-in-law or daughter-in-law) isn't warm to the idea. As much as you'd like to be as available and helpful as possible, some people aren't enamoured by the idea of their inlaws moving in, even though you're there with the best intentions.
  • Their place isn't big enough. Staying in close quarters can be wearing on families, especially new mothers.
  • There are other issues at play, such as the fact you need to bring a pet that isn't welcome or they have a pet you're allergic to.

Renting an extended stay apartment near your family could work well for everyone. If you're from out of town and want to be nearby for the birth and the first few weeks of your new grand baby's life, finding a condo that offers short term or extended stay rentals could be a win-win for everyone involved. You're going to be nearby for a month or two in order to help the new parents out, spend time helping with existing grand kids, and to get to spend time with the new baby.

Many grandparents come as close to the birth as possible but babies come early and they come late. Renting a nearby furnished suite could help you be close enough to be there for the birth, if that's the plan.

Extended stay suites can be a great alternative to hotels and an option with all the comforts of home. You'll have a fully equipped kitchen, the ability to do your own laundry, wireless internet, a land line, and cable TV. It's much more comfortable than staying in a hotel, particularly if you're staying for more than just a few days.

Some extended families can stay together under one roof for extended periods of time, either because they are accustomed to it or because their homes are large enough that people won't get under one another's feet. But for those who want or need their own space, for whatever reason, a furnished short term rental could be the ideal solution.
