At first glance it looks like you're getting the best deal from your direct mail company—until you realize you're not generating the kind of results you want. No, you have not been scammed. It's just that you found a mediocre one.

 

It's uncommon for a direct mail company to offer you a refund or a money-back guarantee, because you can never get back services—the time, effort, and money they invested for your project. That's why you should be careful in choosing one. It's best if as early as possible, you can spot telltale signs they're not up to par:

 

1. It doesn't have any portfolio. A portfolio is not something you request from a direct mail company. It's already a given. This means it should be part of their website, or even of their proposal to you. Some of the samples may be fictional, just to prove to you what they can do, while others are live or authentic. The most important thing is you have a basis of what they can potentially do for your campaign.

 

2. It doesn't say anything about response rates. How important is a response rate? It's something you hope to get in return after sending your direct mail kit to your leads or customers. The higher the response rate, the better are your chances in selling. In fact, it's possible that a couple of those responses are already for direct purchases.

 

Your direct mail company can play a huge part in obtaining favorable response rate. After all, they are the ones who build the marketing materials from scratch. Expectedly, not all their campaigns will work, but having a response rate of 3 percent and up is already good.

 

A weak direct mail company, however, doesn't tell you anything at all.

 

3. You don't have a lot of options. The great thing about direct mail advertising is you can make the most of the recipients' senses, from their touch down to their sight. It's highly ideal if the direct mail company can offer you with a wide variety of options that will help enhance the senses. For example, a textured paper may appeal more than the plain ones, increasing the letters' chances of being opened and read. 

 

4. There's not much support. A good direct mail company doesn't really carry on a project all by itself. It asks you to be participative, so both of you can come up with the most stunning and powerful materials. If customer support seems to be lacking, it's time to start looking for another firm to deal with.
